Too Kool For School ☕️ Interview w/ Kool Dre

You’ve been and lived in a few cities, Do you have a favorite city to live and perform in ? What has been the dopest city ?

Absolutely! My favorite city to perform in has to be Orlando—I've got a lot of family there. Miami is a close second, but New York City for New Year's Eve was an unforgettable experience. The most vibrant city for me, aside from Orlando, has to be NYC. The diversity of the people and the crowds means that no two shows are ever the same, even if they're at the same venue. It's really something special.

You’re asked to create a classic record, who are the features (if any) and what producer would you want on this collaboration ?

First and foremost, I’d want an intro skit by the legendary Bernie Mac to kick things off. For the hook, I’d feature Anthony Hamilton, while the verses would come from Andre 3000 and Jadakiss. And I’d want Pharrell and Chad from N.E.R.D. to produce it. I truly believe that blend would create one of the most classic records out there, and many artists could relate to that style.

What are some things and or advice you would tell to younger self that’s just getting into a music career ?

I’d tell my younger self that no one believes in you until you’ve made it happen, and no one really cares until it's done. If you find people along the way who genuinely support you, keep them close—that’s your team! I’ve learned the hard way that you can't force teammates; you attract the right people when you’re on your path.

How do you feel about the music scene today? Do you believe you would’ve strived better in the CD & Tape era or are you a fan of streaming ?

I really love the current music scene! It allows for so many more artists to get their music out there. Of course, that increases competition, so artists have to be more creative to stand out. I could create a song today, put in the work, and have it heard by this afternoon—that's incredible. Back in the CD and tape days, there was more face-to-face interaction, which helped build a community of fans. Those short conversations could transform strangers into lifelong supporters. Still, I enjoy the challenges of today’s landscape, which constantly inspires my creativity.

What’s next for Kool Dre ?

Next for me is becoming a master marketer and content creator. Being an independent artist today involves so many aspects of the business that many don’t realize. If I can handle it myself, why not? I'm focused on expanding my reach from the East Coast—NY to FL—to the West Coast. We’ve made some headway, and now it’s about recurring shows and building that community, just like we did on the East Coast. We're also working on a college tour right after the IRISH RISE tour. This summer, we’ll finalize those shows and get the tour dates out ASAP. So, Philly, be on the lookout—we’ll be rocking student orientations at a school near you!
